Strategic Procurement Outlook

The department's aim is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This aim is the driving force behind our work and underpins all the department's goals, priorities, values and culture.

The department seeks to realise the following key outcomes:

Australia’s national interests protected and advanced through contributions to international security, national economic and trade performance and global cooperation
Australians informed about and provided access to consular and passport services in Australia and overseas
Public understanding in Australia and overseas of Australia’s foreign and trade policy and a positive image of Australia internationally
Efficient management of the Commonwealth overseas owned estate.

DFAT’s procurement policy provides for the efficient, effective and ethical delivery of the Government’s purchasing and procurement programs. All contractual arrangements entered into by the department are conducted in accordance with the principles of value for money and non-discrimination, and are in compliance with the various policies and legislation that regulate procurement, including the Commonwealth Procurement Guidelines (CPGs).

In 2008-09 DFAT will continue its drive to improve efficiency through a strategic approach to organisation-wide procurement. Specifically, DFAT intends to coordinate with other Commonwealth Agencies to deliver savings through more efficient procurement processes and volume discounts. DFAT will also establish panel arrangements with suppliers of specialist services in an effort to streamline our procurement processes for frequently used goods and services.
