Australia welcomes support for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty
On 30 October, the United Nations First Committee passed a resolution calling for the implementation of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).
For the first time, all five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – United States, United Kingdom, Russia, China and France – sponsored the resolution. In doing so, they have supported a permanent ban on the testing of nuclear weapons, and given an important boost to the treaty’s entry into force.
Australia has been proud to carry this resolution through the First Committee, together with co-authors New Zealand and Mexico, as part of our on-going campaign to bring the CTBT into force as soon as possible.
